The devastating injury occurred after a much larger player from the opposing team violently body-splashed him following a tackle—an act many are calling unnecessary and dangerous.

The injury happened during a Thursday evening junior varsity matchup between Lakeshore and Kalamazoo Central High Schools. Spectators captured the moment on video, showing Colton Mims—a player for Kalamazoo Central—being tackled and then intentionally slammed again by a much larger Lakeshore player.

After the initial tackle brought Colton to the ground, the Lakeshore player appeared to lift himself up, only to leap and crash back down onto Colton’s back while the teen was still curled up on the field.

“As soon as I realized it was him, nothing could stop me,” she told local outlet WSBT. “I’ve never been so shaken in my life.”
